It's a clever way of keeping consumer interest high — an attempt to sell as many of the departing models as possible — before the new one arrives. What makes these models "special" is usually something minor, like the color of the seat fabric or restyled door handles. With a thoroughly redesigned 350z due in 2008, it was time for to send off the existing model with a bang; however, the company's top brass didn't feel they needed to resort to marketing gimmicks (the z is still experiencing consistently solid sales), so they decided to keep things simple and create a car with real high-performance improvements. According to nissan, this z will serve as the focal point in the company's effort to hype its motorsports division, nismo, in the u. S., which hasn't been receiving a whole lot of love recently. Nismo is a household name in japan where the organization shines in the super gt series, the most popular racing series in the country. In the states, we've caught glimpses of nismo in the form of the s-tune and r-tune 350zs (ampersand, january 2007), but otherwise it's been invisible. This nismo 350z will be available at virtually all nissan dealerships and backed by the company's full warranty. It'll hit dealerships in june with a price tag of $37,450, and will be limited to 1500 cars, each coming with a small aluminum plaque on the center console with serial and build numbers. A new hood, front spoiler lip and front bumper give the 350z a fresh look. Reminiscent of the long-nose 350z gt we featured a few years ago ("," august 2004), these pieces make the car sleeker in profile and add a more aggressive stance. The rear has been redesigned, with a new bumper that incorporates an underbody diffuser and a rear wing straight from the super gt race car. These exterior modifications aren't just for show, they're functional too, with downforce improved significantly. It rides about a half inch lower and features new shocks developed by yamaha exclusively for the nismo 350z. These dampers attach to right and left frame members and serve to damp torsional vibration and flex, providing better driver feedback. Overall ride quality is still on the firm side, but it's not harsh or uncomfortable. Structural rigidity has also been improved via more reinforcements to key parts of the body. Turn-in was crisp, while the suspension did a commendable job of keeping body roll minimal and the handling balance just this side of neutral. The nismo-tuned sports car understeers slightly through tight corners, but its overall behavior is predictable and controllable. Around the skidpad, this 350z posted 0. 90g, and danced through the slalom at 70. 7 mph. Both figures are improvements over the stock 350z (0. 89g and 67. 3 mph, respectively). Unfortunately, nissan didn't touch the 3. 5-liter v-6. Power goes up about 5 bhp, thanks to a new custom exhaust system, but we saw no real improvements in its acceleration to 60 mph or to the quarter-mile mark. Nismo does have a 400-bhp 3. 8-liter version of the vq that's being used in the 350z rs competition (a race car created for a one-make race series in japan); why it didn't drop this engine into the nismo 350z's engine bay is a mystery. The nismo 350z is a driver's car, pure and simple. It's a car that boasts the handling character of european sports cars — more so than the stock 350z — at a much lower price.
